Record-Breaking Catches and Sizes

One of the most talked-about aspects of the 2026 season was the size and number of Bluefin tuna caught. Anglers reported multiple catches exceeding 600 pounds, with a few exceptional specimens tipping the scales at over 700 pounds. These large fish not only thrilled fishermen but also highlighted the health of the Bluefin population in the region.

  • The average size of Bluefin tuna caught increased by approximately 15% compared to the previous five years.

  • Several tournaments recorded new personal bests and local records.

  • The Virginia State record was shattered with a 835.8 lb monster.

  • The standing NC bluefin record is 877 lbs. caught in 2017.

These impressive catches brought excitement to the OBX fishing community and attracted visitors eager to witness or participate in the action.

Nearshore action was Hot

OBX's 2026 season featured remarkably nearshore action:

  • Giants encountered 0.5–3 miles offshore, with catches reported 2 miles or less from beaches like Hatteras. This proximity made it accessible for day trips, though schools may shift farther (up to 20–50 miles) as the season progresses.

Boats and Gear

Boats of all sizes have been successful; from Jet Skis to Charter boats!

Due to the strength of these fish it is important to have the right tackle for the battle.

  • Rods/Reels: Heavy-action (e.g., Shimano Tiagra) with 50–130 lb drag reels like Penn.

  • Line/Leaders: 130 lb braid; 150–175 lb fluoro/mono leaders.

  • Lures/Baits: Ballyhoo rigs for trolling, chunking with butterfish/herring, jigs.

  • Techniques: Trolling, chumming, jigging; gaffs/cranes for hoisting giants.

Historical Japanese Interest in Purchasing

  • Japan remains the top global buyer, importing 90% of world supply for sushi/sashimi since the 1970s. The demand for high quality fatty bluefin tuna, or "Toro" is extremely high. The owner of a popular Japanese sushi chain recently paid $3.2 million for a prized 535 lb bluefin. Tokyo sushi restaurants can charge a premium for highly graded

Tips for Anglers Planning for Future Seasons

For those looking to experience the OBX Bluefin tuna season in the coming years, here are some practical tips based on the 2026 season’s insights:

  • Timing matters: The peak season typically runs from late spring through early summer. Plan trips accordingly to increase chances of encountering large tuna.

  • Gear up properly: Use heavy-duty rods, reels, and lines designed for big game fishing. Circle hooks are recommended for live baits.

  • Stay informed: Follow local fishing reports and weather forecasts. Join fishing forums or clubs to get real-time updates.

  • Practice catch and release: When possible, release smaller or non-target fish to support population health.

  • Respect regulations: Always check the latest rules on size limits, quotas, and protected areas.

Important Dates

  • In 2026 the Commercial Bluefin season opened January 1 and closed January 14. Recreational season remains open until quotas are met. Recreational fisherman may keep one Bluefin per day and the fish must measure between 27 and 73 inches in curved fork length.

Happy Fishing and Tight Lines to all!
